(pieces from op.72, 76, 116, 117, 118, 119 & 10) OH Yann Shie “I would definitely want to hear more of you,” – remarked Gary Graffman after her performance at the Oxford Piano Festival in July 2009. 3rd prizewinner at the 2008 Nikolai Rubinstein International Piano Competition in France, Miss Oh is also the first Malaysian to enter and graduate from the prestigious Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow, Russia (alma mater of Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Svyatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Mikhail Pletnev and Ivo Pogorelich to name a few) in November 2008 with a Doctorate in Piano Performance and two minors in chamber ensemble and voice accompaniment. Since her debut of the Grieg Piano Concerto at the age of 13 with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall Orchestra at the DBKL Auditorium and a subsequent appearance abroad at the Liszt Memorial Concert Hall in Budapest, Hungary the following year, Yann Shie has been a frequent performer in Malaysia, playing in various concert halls including the Dewan Merdeka in PWTC, the Komtar Auditorium, the Dewan Budaya at the University of Science in Penang and appearing as soloist with the KL Symphony Orchestra and KL Youth Orchestra. Throughout her studies in Moscow, Yann Shie's playing has taken her from the halls in Moscow including the Rachmaninov Hall and the Small Hall of the Conservatoire, the Concert Hall of the Central Music School affiliated to the Conservatoire, the Prokofiev Museum and the Glinka Museum to the Sheremet’yev Palace in St. Petersburg and the Great Hall of the Tambov Rachmaninov Music Institute in Tambov. She is a regular performer at the annual Oxford Philomusica Piano Festival in Oxford, UK. Other appearances include performing at the Piano Festival in Nice, France in August 2007 and in Leipzig at the Bluthner PianoforteFabrik Pavillion. In June 2009 Yann Shie conducted an all-Schumann piano lecture-recital at the Kaohsiong Wen Tzao Language College. Later in July she was guest soloist for the 2009 HSBC Classic’s “Festival of Rising Stars”, where she performed the Yellow River Piano Concerto with the KLPac orchestra. 2010 brought her to Hangzhou and Shanghai on a piano duo tour and a master class at the Shanghai Music Conservatoire. Yann Shie returned for the 2011 HSBC Classics, staging a Piano Quintet Chamber Music Evening and a chamber ensemble workshop. Events in 2012 included 2 recitals in Japan in March and adjudicating for the Kota Kinabalu Music Festival in early June and the MYOF Music Festival in early September. Yann Shie has worked with internationally renowned pianists and pedagogues Sulamita Aronovsky, Vladimir Krainev, John Lill, Xu Zhong and Patsy Toh in master classes. She herself has given a series of master classes for the piano faculties of UPM,UiTM, USM and UCSI. She is currently on the faculty of the Vibrante School of Music in Subang Jaya and an appointed external examiner for Master of Music Programme of TwinTech University College. On a side note, Yann Shie was engaged by the Esplanade Theatre of Singapore as assistant stage manager for the South-East Asia Tour of the renowned Mariinsky Ballet Troup and Orchestra from St. Petersburg in Sept 2011. |
